Join the Morrison Riverscapes Lab
Hands-on river science for people who want to make a difference
We begin with curiosity, but what keeps the work going is the real-time interactions with communities, rivers, and ecosystems. We’re motivated by questions that span large timescales but have impacts today, where research can inform decisions as they happen and help shape better outcomes for rivers and the people who depend on them. Because rivers rarely get to speak for themselves, we see part of our role as making their dynamics and habitats heard and understood—translating complexity into insight without losing nuance and rigor. Students in the lab are drawn to applied science for this reason: it’s not just about understanding, it’s about engaging, contributing, and seeing the impact of their work beyond the page. We value a thoughtful, steady approach to collaboration, and we try to build a space where people take ownership of their ideas while supporting one another along the way.
What motivates us
What we value
Exploration
We follow our curiosity and go where the research takes us. Students have the opportunity to direct their research focus and pursue their ideas with enthusiasm.
Initiative
With the freedom to explore, we chart a course and work hard to get there. We push past obstacles with creative problem-solving and innovation. We encourage one another and ask for help when we need it.
Cooperation
While we’re self-motivated, we place a premium on collaboration. Whether it’s assisting in the field, giving feedback on a presentation, or debugging a model, we support one another’s work and celebrate each other’s triumphs.
